All That You Need to Know About Ganesh Chaturthi – Ganesh Chaturthi has a great mythological significance when we talk about Hinduism. The festival is marked as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh, who was born to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Devotees all over India celebrate the birth of beloved Lord Ganesh with great pomp and show. The festival is very readily celebrated in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal. Orissa, Goa and Chhattisgarh. The auspicious festival is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi as Vinayak is another name attributed to Lord Ganesh. He stands as a symbol of prosperity, intellect, good luck, commerce, and travel. The day falls in the Bhadrapada month according to Hindu Calendar which corresponds to the August and September months in Edwardian Calendar. The celebration is not simply confined to India. Hindus all over the world celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, every year with immense spirituality.

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the beginning of a ten-day festival where devotees bring idols of Lord Ganesh to their homes and take care of him for the next ten days. These days are marked with the singing of devotional songs, dancing, cooking festive cuisines, especially modaks. Modaks are believed to be Lord Ganesh’s favourite sweet, therefore they are prepared in outrageous numbers and distributed all around. People love celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi as it brings the community together for worshipping the Lord.

It is believed that Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesh using sandalwood. On an occasion, she asked him to stand guard while she bathed. Lord Shiva entered the premises and wanted to meet the Goddess. He was then angered by Ganesh when the latter did not allow him to pass. In his rage, Lord Shiva severed Lord Ganesh’s head. However, on seeing Parvati’s lamentations, he attached an elephant’s head on Ganesh’s body and we got our Elephant headed God. Lord Ganesh is a favourite among children owing to his several interesting stories that are quite entertaining. Lord Ganesh stands mightily as a symbol of prosperity and wisdom. This year calls for an understanding of all that we need to know about Ganesh Chaturthi. Let us take a look at a few of his lessons that must stay with us all our lives:

Points All That You Need to Know About Ganesh Chaturthi

  1. Creativity: Lord Ganesh empowered creativity above all. Kids must learn from Lord Ganesh that creativity is a way of life that can help them express themselves freely and follow their path independently. Creativity calls for a free spirit that can learn to do what it wants without falling into society’s traps of rules and conventions. This does not simply mean that one can break all the rules but calls for a nuanced understanding of the manner how rules and discipline must be maintained without making one a slave of society. Creativity allows children to choose the path they are passionate about. Even if they make mistakes, there are always lessons to be learned without being disheartened over fate. It is the creative juice that can allow young minds to imagine boundless success with hard work and a positive attitude.
  2. Love and Respect Your Parents: There is a very interesting anecdote from Lord Ganesh’s life that portrays his immense devotion to his parents. Lord Shiv and Goddess Parvati organised a challenge between Lord Ganesh and his elder sibling Lord Kartik. Both of them had to circumvent the entire world thrice and the one who would reach the starting point would be the winner. The parent Gods set the reward of a magical fruit that would grant the winner endless knowledge and immortality. Lord Kartik was a very fast runner and began the race competitively. However, Lord Ganesh simply marched in a circle surrounding his parents thrice stating that for him his parents were his entire world. To Lord Kartik’s shock, he had been beaten fair and square. This anecdote not only brings out the level of practical intelligence Lord Ganesh possessed but also highlights how devoted he was towards his parents. This is for us to learn that we must always respect and treat our parents with utmost dignity as they are the figures of God almighty himself for us.
  3. Knowledge is Power: Though this maxim has been said aloud time and again by various Western philosophers, this maxim holds true according to Hindu mythology as well. Lord Ganesh was a very erudite figure who valued books and education greatly. That is why he is considered a symbol of wisdom. We must always value his spirit and thus give importance to education and knowledge in general. Education, in today’s world, can bring light to many darkened corners of the world. An educated family member can raise the living standard of an entire family. We have seen how educated parents make sure that their children receive the best education because they realise its importance. Education, with the blessings of Lord Ganesh, can bring life-changing prosperity.
  4. Never Give Up: This calls for another anecdote from Ganesh’s life where he was approached by Vyasa to write down Mahabharata. Lord Ganesh accepted the proposal on the condition that Vyasa would not stop dictating, not even for the Lord to write down the words. Lord Ganesh wrote so fast that he would not require Vyasa to slow down. However, Lord Ganesh’s pen broke down while writing, and Vyasa went on dictating. Ganesh, without giving up, broke down his own trunk and wrote The Mahabharata with it. Therefore, like Lord Ganesh, we might encounter circumstances working against us, but we must be persistent no matter what.
