Celebrating Diwali at The Summit School
Celebrating Diwali at The Summit School – Diwali is one of the most celebrated festivals in India. Diwali week is an entirely different vibe that transforms the entire country into a beautiful haven decorated with diyas, candles, and lights. The preparations for Diwali begin at least a month in advance where people clear out their homes, apply new coats of paints, buy whatever is required in the households, and prepare their homes to welcome several guests on Diwali.
The festival has a huge significance in the life of Hindu believers. Cleaning homes and offices are also associated with cleaning minds from impure thoughts and notions. Diwali has great mythological importance in Hinduism where people bid adieu to all that is negative in their lives and plan to uphold the principles of morality and truth in their lives ahead. This time is marked with meeting and embracing loved ones along with upholding the values of serving humanity with a pure heart.
Diwali marks the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after his successful battle against Ravan in Lanka. According to the legend, Lord Ram was spending his fourteen years-long exile with his wife Sita and younger brother Lakshman in a forest. Lord Ram attracted the improper advances of Ravan’s sister Suparnkha who was then punished by Lakshman with her nose cut by his sword. The insulted and bitter Suparnkha ran back to her demon brother swearing for revenge. Ravan attacked Sita in the disguise of a hermit, abducted her, and flew her back to Lanka. Lord Ram and Lakshman organized an army of monkeys (vanar sena) and fought against the mighty demon king. Diwali marks Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya after the battle which also coincided with the end of his fourteen-year-old exile. His return was celebrated by the people of Ayodhya and he was welcomed as the true king who fought fair against evil and was victorious.
Lord Ram was the embodiment of morality, honesty, and truth. He is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu on Earth who had taken birth to defeat the powerful but evil king Ravan. Ravan on the other hand represented all that is immoral and bad for humanity. He was a devoted warrior who worshipped Lord Shiva with strong determination and was granted immense power in return. However, he used his powers arrogantly and made humans, as well as all the devtas, suffer. It was his arrogance and pride that took him towards his own peril. He was mesmerized by the beauty of Devi Sita and wanted her to become his wife. However, Devi Sita retained her purity throughout the period of her abduction and Lord Ram arrived to take her back home. All the power and magic Ravan had was finally defeated as it was misused for a bad cause. The battle of Lod Ram against Ravan represents the battle of good against evil. Even though Ravan had an entire army of his own with immense magical power on his side, Lord Ram defeated him along with shattering his pride and arrogance. Thus, signifying that truth and righteousness always win, no matter how powerful evil might appear. It also brings a lesson for humans to stay on the path of righteousness, no matter how difficult times get.
Each Year, Diwali reminds us to value morality and humanity above all else. In our fast-paced technological world, it is quite easy for individuals to lose their sense of self and indulge in evil acts. We are all running after material comforts and often fail to recognize that true comfort lies in keeping our consciences clear and upholding the truth. The legend of Lord Ram’s victory against Ravan explains that we must never lose sight of what is actually valuable for humans, peace and love for other humans. Society can progress only if we stay together as community and work for mutual progress, rather than individual profits. Only when we will uphold the principles of righteousness, truth, morality, peace, and equality, will we be able to live peacefully and establish the ideal society, i.e.; Ram Rajya. To educate the masses for these goals, it is necessary that we keep these lessons in mind and spread them far and wide. It is also extremely important that we educate young children about these values instead of simply celebrating Diwali each year as a time of party and enjoyment.
The Summit School takes upon itself to educate all the children about these values. Children are taught about the importance of being truthful and righteous. They are warned against the perils of mindlessly indulging to satisfy one’s own selfish desires. They are guides to maintain healthy and peaceful relationships with themselves as well as the society. Spiritual growth is prioritised along with cognitive and physical development. The Summit School understands that children need to grow holistically to help them tackle modern world problems. We are witnesses to a society that is losing its spiritual roots and moving towards simple materialistic pleasures. Our duty as a society is to help those who have been strayed from the right path and educate the upcoming generations for the same. We also understand that the right way to help the young generations is through the right approach towards education. Modern education must not be simply about gaining a mark sheet with straight A’s, but aiming for a right and educated approach towards life. To ensure such growth, we need to prioritize spirituality along with intellectual growth. Not only is this an answer to the rising numbers of mental health problems, but this will also ensure a better and prosperous future for all.
Celebrating Diwali at The Summit School is all about ensuring that children are guided towards spiritual growth. Once children are taught about these values, they are motivated to express themselves creatively for the same. Free creative expressions help children to be rooted in values that are important. Not only does creativity help young minds to develop values like confidence and honesty, but also helps them in gathering the strength to stand for what is right. True creativity has its roots in an individual’s soul which always favors righteousness above all else. Children are given the opportunities to participate in activities such as dancing, singing, public speaking, and so on when the entire school gathers together to celebrate this auspicious occasion each year.
The modern world has arrived at an age of great perils. We are not only violent towards each other but also against mother nature. We have seen nature retaliate every now and then against humanity. This is a great sign and lesson for us to improve our ways of life. Life has become unhealthy and the environment has become extremely polluted. This Diwali, we must also spread awareness about being conscious towards the environment. Young children are the future of tomorrow and they must learn to adapt to alternative ways of life where they can help in protecting and healing nature. Perils like pollution, global warming, and climate change are the biggest evil against society and we must come together to act against their progress. It is this message that was upheld while celebrating Diwali at The Summit School this year.
