How to Entertain Your Kids Over Holiday Break
The lockdown lives have left a lot of us feeling frustrated while hell is plagued over the planet. This is high time that we engage in activities to boost our mental health and bring a level of normalcy to our lives. Children too have been undergoing severe stress as their lives were turned upside down due to the pandemic. Now that things are beginning to get back to normal, we do need to address all that our families have been lacking over time. Even though people were spending a lot of time at home during the lockdown, it was not very enjoyable for a lot of people because of the fear and insecurities going around due to the pandemic. Now that children are coming across another set of routine holidays, here are a few fun tips on how to entertain your kids over the holiday break:
1) Going Out: Now that we are not plagued with the covid lockdown, we can plan an outing over the holidays. Depending upon your budget and how much time you have, you can choose to plan an outstation trip or a short visit somewhere in the city itself.
a) Outstation Trip: If you appreciate nature, you can enjoy a great trip to the hill stations to visit during the holidays. Many hill stations and valleys are now welcoming tourists along with following covid protocols. You can plan to visit places like Shimla, Rishikesh, Jammu-Kashmir, and so on. This trip would be a nice break to relax and rejuvenate over the holidays along with spending some family time together.
b) Short City Outings: If going to outstations is not on your list, you can plan a short visit to your city itself. Look out for interesting places like museums or art galleries. You can make this an enjoyable as well as an educational trip. If you are looking for something that is action-oriented, you can go to amusement parks as well. Keep track of what all is happening in your locality and you can plan accordingly.
c) Visit your Nearest Park: You can plan a routine visit to your nearest park these winters. This can be a great way to maintain a schedule over the holidays. You can plan a small exercise session or just a family stroll to the nearby park. If it is dry on a sunny day, you can also plan a sitting session while soaking under the sunlight.
2) Fun Sessions at Home: Family time can be well spent at home as well. In case you are looking to invest in some quality time at home, there are various options for that as well.
a) Bring on the Board Games: Board games are really interesting and fun when played with our loved ones. They are easy to learn and age-appropriate for almost all children and adults. Evergreen games like carrom-board, Ludo- snake-ladder, and monopoly are loved by all. Children will not only develop the spirit of friendly competition at home but will also have some childhood memories to cherish when they grow up.
b) Movie-Night: You can also plan a weekly movie night in a cozy homely set-up. There are various Universal-approved movies you can choose from and enjoy with your children. Movies like KungFu Panda, Up, Home Alone, Training My Dragon, Harry Potter, etc. are classics that your child can enjoy and also learn some moral values from.
c) Cooking Shenanigans: A family that cooks together, stays together. Cooking is a great way to bond with family members. You can engage in simple dishes like vegetable sandwiches or go deeper with complicated family recipes as well. The child will not only appreciate the labor that goes into maintaining a home but will also learn some life skills during the process. Just make sure that the child is safe from sharp objects, hot appliances, boiling water, hot curry, etc.
d) Reading Sessions: Reading is a great habit to be developed during a young age. Make sure that your child appreciates the benefits of reading from an early age. Reading does not only improve cognitive and language skills but is also a great way to engage with different cultures while being entertained. You can ask your child to read a book while you are at work and discuss it once you get home.
3) Holiday Homework: Children usually dread the bulky homework they are given during the holidays. You can make it fun by engaging with them for the same. Children do appreciate learning when we introduce technology and innovation in it. For homework like science projects, you can introduce them to the practical functioning of things in our daily lives. You can go with really interesting YouTube videos or conduct safe experiments that can be done in the setting of your homes. For subjects like Geography and History too, you can go with interesting and innovative explanations. For language subjects, make sure that you carry out proper discussions about what all your child has read and how he/she can approach the project question.
4) Art and Craft: Creativity is the key to genius among children. However, creativity gets lost in the monotonous school routine. Holidays can be spent wonderfully by being engaged in fun craft activities. You can choose to engage in some ‘Do It Yourself’ craft work like making wall hangings, decorating baskets, etc. If your child is in the primary level, you can give them simple drawing or coloring tasks to keep them engaged. In case your child is in their teenage and can handle sophisticated gadgets well, it would be great if you can interest them in photography, video-graphing and so on. The world is changing fast today and technology is something that can help your child to keep up with the changing times. Therefore, make sure that this time is spent well in some learning and productivity.
Holidays can be memorable for children when spent well with the family. Make sure that your child enjoys the holidays and appreciates the simple pleasures of being comfortable in a family environment. In case your child is really interested in an extra-curricular activity, this is a great time to provide them with the extra coaching or guidance they might need. Depending upon your child’s interest, you can send your child to classes like dancing, sports, pottery, and so on. Developing these skills will help in boosting their confidence, along with providing them with options to spend their time on.
